Q for all Christians (not just JW) about the ransom.

so this is the basic logical flaw in christianity i believe.

a brother identified it from the stage for me in a talk.

we all agree (as christians and jw's) that the ransom was necessary because adam lost his perfection and everlasting life.. this is a paraphrase from the talk:.

I have read a lot of different views and they all boil down to the same thing: God did both give and receive the medium for sacrifice (Jesus) but believing that is not right, God did it out of love and you should just accept it.

The question remains: Why is God credited with being both the giver and receiver of the atonement sacrifice, it doesn't make sense to give to yourself while letting others suffer at your hands. Another question that flows from it: Why was the atonement necessary? Or was the atonement paid to somebody else (which would make more sense) but then to whom.

Our parents sinned and as their punishment they died thus completing their punishment. However we are being punished for their error as well which we can't change thus the punisher provided a symbolic receiver of the penalty but chose not to receive it right then and there but wait a little over 2000 years and let countless others suffer?

If the above makes sense to you, please explain it to me. For me it's easier to believe that this is all hogwash unless somebody can explain the reasoning behind it. It would be much more acceptable if this God-person was a duality of both Good and Evil and the Good paid the Evil.

This is a paraphrase from the talk:

So a ransom is usually when somebody kidnaps your family member (in this case your sinless everlasting life) and then you have to pay it back (say a million dollars).

However as humans we cannot pay it back since we are imperfect. Bulls and goats as Paul said could not fulfill this, only Jesus could since he was perfect. So what does God do in his eternal wisdom is after demanding bulls and goats for thousands of years that he knew cannot provide the ransom provide the ransom (Jesus) to be paid back to him (oh, so very loving of him).

So this is the point where you have to pay for your family member but you have no money (the million dollars) and nobody is able to provide you the money (you're broke and have no credit and you won't live long or good enough anyway).

So what does God do, he provides the ransom for you. The kidnapper gives you the million dollars so you (humanity) can give him back the million dollars to fulfill the ransom.

This makes no sense, why give somebody else grief for thousands of years if you're going to give yourself the money anyway (this is what the brother said).

This is a loving arrangement though from God (huh??? I hooked off right there)

My thoughts: Why go through all the trouble to kidnap somebodies everlasting life and demand a ransom that cannot be paid by the victims of your kidnapper just so you can give your victims grief and pay yourself back thousands of years later without any real benefit to anyone.

Now you could argue that it was Satan that took our everlasting life but the ransom does not get paid to Satan, the ransom gets paid back to God. God took our everlasting life on a paradise earth as a ransom and then he pays himself back thousands of years later, there are no other parties included. IMHO God is an asshole or Dr. Evil - I want 1 billion, gagillion, fafillion, shabolubalu million illion yillion... yen.

my strange neighbor

a neighbor four doors south of me.

the night before our trash pick up he send his sons out (20-30 year old) with their trash and fill up the neighbors trash cans.

i was speechless when my next door neighbor told me this.

Trash left on the street for pick up is available and open to the public. I don't think there is much you CAN do about it unless you can make an agreement with the trash people to go on your private property to pick up trash (but don't be surprised that they would never make the effort to actually do so).

Already 8 generations passed since 1914. Even if they overlapped, they would still be wrong. The biblical generation is ~70 years. 2 overlapping generations are 140 years. However they have to be anointed so this doesn't happen until they're at least not children anymore so I would say 21?

(2 * 70) - (2 * 21) + (-607 + 2520 + 1) = 2012.

Armageddon is coming in 2012. Witnesses jump on the Mayan Calendar bandwagon and prove it's correctness using cherry-picked and mistranslated bible verses.

Does Anyone know what congregation RBC is?

there seems to be some kind of a trend, i think of jw congregations separating from the authority of the watchtower if the elders vote for it.. i'm trying to get more information about what this is and whether or not the wt hq sanctions is, ever.. thanks for any info,.

The JW-RBC website is poorly constructed and definitely not future-proof (Silverlight and YAML). At this point not much information there, just trying to collect information from volunteers and a list of upcoming projects the volunteer is assigned to.

Yup, all the talks were basically saying: Armageddon is REALLY close now, the Great Tribulation is right on the front doorstep (quote "doesn't that give you goosebumps" I thought "not really, I'll see you again within 10 years"), don't leave now (to me it sounded like "please don't leave us, it's dark and cold and I don't know where I am").

Oh yes, the false prophecies about the statues that nobody understood and many didn't even know ever changed back and forth. No mention about the UN, just the Anglo-American world power (which is slowly losing as we speak to the Asiatic world power). They're hanging on to whatever political event that places the US in a good spot in the world, whenever the US loses it's power in the world because of the way it's being governed right now, the JW org. will self-destruct.

after reading some of the paragraphs in the watchtower, i have this opinion to share:.

i really wish the wt would stop trying to teach witnesses about their biased views of history and economic theory.

The myth about "working a territory to life - NOT to death."

in the 1980s, when the jw's door-knocking campaign had been revived somewhat, many congregations started covering their territory quite frequently.

we were repeatedly assured not to be put off, that congregations "worked their territory to life, not to death;"and that the "greatest increases were coming from territories that were being worked often.".

during those years, i was in an area that was spilling over with jws.

Door-to-door ministry is the 'trademark' of the WTBTS. They actually say it themselves in all the KM's. Any type of nicely dressed up people walking down the street are considered JW's whether they are or not and that is their 'advertisements' (the '80's and '90's view that bad advertisements are also advertisements).

We have territories that have a lot of do-not-disturbs, no-peddling, I even saw a forbidden sign with the silhouette of a man and a women with a briefcase and a handbag on one of the doors (found it: http://bestuff.com/stuff/jehovahs-witnesses) and recently we have gotten a restraining order against our congregation from one of the houses so we're banned from the street. Some have been shot at (one pioneer has actual bullet holes in their car) but they all write it off as 'persecution'.

My favorite urban myths:

ACDC - Anti-Christ, Devil Concert

KISS, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Guns 'n Roses, Slipknot, Beastie Boys, Marilyn Manson, Limp Bizkit, NOFX, The Offspring, HIM, ABBA, the Gorillaz, ICP, Snoop Dogg, TuPac were all bad and inspired by Satan himself and some had hidden messages from demons.

Playing tapes in reverse would let you hear messages from demons.

Heavy Metal would have subliminal messages that make you kill your parents

Rap has messages that encourage the gangster life, drugs and "illicit sex relationships"

Brother so-and-so saw demons appear next to me when we played (insert band here, usually Beatles or something 70's)

Brother so-and-so was visited by demons and his stuff went through a wall when he had all those records from (insert band here)

When we threw out music from (insert band here) our life was much better and we had less accidents happen.

(Insert famous classical/jazz music conductor/creator) asked me about the Kingdom Melodies when he heard them while I was playing them at my job

Funny enough I have music from all of the above mentioned and actual Wicca music. Nothing ever happened to me and I was never inclined to do bad. If you ever had the opportunity to go to an (acid) house music concert or go into the trance/hardcore scene, you should do so. I did frequently when I was a young witness. Music that is so loud and low in frequency that it appears like it's fairly quiet but you can't hear yourself talk. Nice if you have to go to the meeting the next day, you'll hear droning in your ears all Sunday.
